Ice is really just frozen water, water that got so cold it turned hard and solid instead of staying liquid. When it warms in your hand, it melts back into ordinary water, showing it never stopped being water.
Ice is not cold glass or white sand, since those are different materials that do not melt into water; glass and sand stay solid at room temperature.
Water is one of the few common substances easily seen switching between solid, liquid, and gas, since ice, water, and steam are the same substance at different temperatures.
