In June 2026, scientists reported that global sea surface temperatures had climbed to nearly 21°C on average, breaking prior records for that month.
Unusually warm ocean surface water adds extra energy into the atmosphere, fueling stronger storms and marine heatwaves, since storms draw much of their power from warm water evaporating and rising. Warmer oceans also stress ecosystems directly, causing coral bleaching and disrupting fish populations.
Warmer surfaces do not cool global air temperatures, they add heat and moisture into weather systems, and record ocean warmth is not linked to falling sea levels, warming water expands and actually contributes to rising seas.
Warmer oceans also absorb carbon dioxide less efficiently, meaning one of the planet's biggest natural buffers against rising CO2 weakens just as global emissions remain a persistent problem.
