Why can a giant ship float?

Ships are full of air inside
A ship is shaped to hold lots of air, so it pushes away enough water to stay up. A coin has no air space, so it sinks straight down.

A giant ship floats because it is shaped to hold lots of air inside its hollow hull, which makes the ship push aside, or displace, enough water to support its own weight. Even though the metal itself is heavy, the overall shape spreads that weight across a huge hollow volume, so the ship as a whole is lighter than the water it displaces.

Water isn't sticky in a way that would hold a ship up, and metal definitely isn't lighter than water on its own, a solid chunk of steel sinks immediately, which is exactly why ship design matters so much.

A tiny coin has no hollow air space at all, it's solid all the way through, so it displaces far too little water to stay afloat and sinks straight to the bottom, the opposite situation from a hollow, air-filled ship hull.
