Plants, algae, and some bacteria power almost all life on Earth through a process that turns sunlight into usable chemical energy.
Photosynthesis produces glucose and oxygen from carbon dioxide, water, and light energy. Chlorophyll inside plant cells captures sunlight and uses that energy to rearrange the atoms in carbon dioxide and water into glucose, a sugar molecule the organism can burn for energy or use as a building block for growth, releasing oxygen as a leftover byproduct in the process.
Nitrogen and methane, and carbon monoxide and hydrogen, are not the products of photosynthesis, those are chemical outputs of entirely different biological or industrial processes and play no role in how plants convert sunlight into usable energy.
Nearly all the oxygen present in Earth's atmosphere today exists because of billions of years of photosynthesis carried out by ocean algae, cyanobacteria, and land plants, meaning the air we breathe is essentially a byproduct of an ancient and ongoing biological process.
