Bananas are naturally faintly radioactive because of one common element they contain in small amounts.
Potassium makes bananas slightly radioactive. Bananas are naturally rich in potassium, and a tiny fraction of all natural potassium exists as a radioactive form called potassium-40, so any potassium-rich food, including bananas, carries a trace of natural radioactivity.
Uranium and plutonium are far more strongly radioactive elements used in nuclear reactors and weapons, but they are not found in bananas; only naturally occurring potassium is responsible for the fruit's faint radioactivity.
The radiation from a banana is so minuscule it poses no health risk at all, and scientists sometimes use the playful 'banana equivalent dose' as a fun, easy-to-picture way to compare much larger radiation exposures to something familiar.
