Early VR headsets needed external sensors placed around the room to know where you were. Modern standalone headsets use their own built-in cameras to map the space and track motion.
Inside-out tracking uses cameras mounted on the headset itself to observe the room, then combines that visual data with internal motion sensors to calculate position and orientation in real time. This removes the need for separate external sensor boxes, since the headset watches the world around it rather than being watched by fixed stations.
Outside-in tracking is the earlier approach this contrasts against, external cameras watching the headset instead. Dead-reckoning-only means estimating position from motion sensors alone, which drifts without outside correction.
Inside-out tracking made fully wireless, standalone VR practical for ordinary living rooms, since users no longer needed to mount sensors on walls before playing.
