For years Apple allowed iPhone apps to be installed only through its own App Store, but EU competition rules forced a change.
Installing apps from outside Apple's own App Store became possible for iPhone users in the EU starting in 2024. For years, Apple had allowed iPhone software to be installed only through its official App Store, but under pressure from the DMA the company updated iOS to permit sideloading and third-party app marketplaces within the EU, giving users and developers new install paths that had never existed on the iPhone before.
Using an iPhone without any Apple ID at all and replacing the iPhone's operating system with Android are both far more drastic changes than what the DMA actually required, and neither reflects what Apple's iOS update in early 2024 actually changed.
This shift ended the App Store's long-standing exclusive control over what software could run on an iPhone in the EU, a change many developers had sought since it opened the door to alternative payment arrangements bypassing Apple's commission.
