A penguin has wings but you never see it fly in the sky.
Penguins use their wings for swimming underwater. Over millions of years, penguin wings evolved from flying wings into stiff, flipper-like paddles that push powerfully through water, letting penguins chase down fish with speed and agility instead of soaring through air.
Penguins don't use their wings for digging tunnels or building nests, those tasks are handled with their feet, beaks, or simply by arranging pebbles and materials found nearby, not by flapping their flippers.
Because their wings work so well underwater, penguins are sometimes described as 'flying' through the ocean, and some species can reach impressive underwater speeds while diving surprisingly deep in search of food, far beyond what any flying bird could manage in open air.
