A baby kangaroo, called a joey, is born so tiny it could fit in a teaspoon, so it climbs straight into a cozy pouch to keep growing safely.

Where does a baby kangaroo grow after it is born?

Inside its mother's pouch
A newborn joey is blind, hairless, and smaller than your thumb, so it crawls into its mom's pouch and drinks her milk for months until it is big enough to hop out on its own.

A newborn kangaroo, called a joey, is born incredibly tiny, blind, and without fur, so right after birth it crawls up its mother's belly and climbs into her pouch on its own. Inside, it clamps onto a teat and drinks milk for months while it keeps growing, safe and warm, until it's finally big and strong enough to peek out and hop around.

Kangaroos don't build nests in trees or dig underground burrows — those are behaviors of very different animals like some birds or rabbits, not marsupials that carry their babies with them everywhere they go.

A joey can stay close to its mom's pouch for many months even after it starts hopping out, diving back in headfirst whenever it senses danger nearby.
