Built from standardized 10-centimeter cubic units and cheap enough to launch dozens at a time as rideshare payloads, these tiny satellites multiplied across orbit in the 2010s and 2020s.

What are these standardized miniature satellites called?

CubeSats
CubeSats are built from 10 cm cubic units (1U), making them cheap and quick to develop. Universities, startups, and space agencies have launched thousands, turning small satellites into one of the biggest trends in modern spaceflight.

CubeSats are built from standardized 10-centimeter cubic units, commonly called 1U, which can be combined into larger configurations while still fitting cheaply and easily as secondary rideshare payloads on other launches, dramatically lowering the cost and complexity of putting a working satellite into orbit.

Geostationary satellites are a category defined by their orbit, parked far above the equator so they appear fixed relative to a point on Earth, not by their small standardized size. Space probes are typically large, custom-built craft sent to explore other planets or moons, the opposite of a cheap standardized miniature satellite.

The standardized cube format means universities and even student teams can build and launch a working satellite for a fraction of what a traditional satellite costs, which is why CubeSats have become a common way to train the next generation of aerospace engineers.
