If a hungry fish bites off one of a starfish's arms, the starfish does not have to worry too much, because something amazing happens over the next few months.

What can a starfish do if it loses an arm?

Slowly grow a whole new arm back
Starfish, also called sea stars, can regrow a lost arm over several months, and some species can even regrow an entire body from just one arm if part of the central body is still attached. Their arms are packed with important organs, which is how this regrowing trick works.

Starfish can regrow a lost arm slowly over months, because many vital organs sit inside their arms rather than one central body, so as long as enough body remains, new tissue can regenerate.

Growing two new heads instead of an arm isn't how it works; they replace what's lost with a normal arm. The idea a starfish can never regrow a limb is wrong too — it's one of their best-known traits.

In some species, a whole new starfish can grow from just one detached arm, if a piece of the central body stays attached.
