Sea otters float in groups called rafts, holding paws while resting so ocean currents and waves don't slowly separate them while they're asleep and can't swim back.
It isn't really a game, even though it looks playful; the behavior serves a survival purpose. It's also not mainly about warmth — otters rely on thick fur, not paw-holding, to stay warm.
Otters sometimes wrap themselves in kelp before napping too, using it like an anchor so they don't drift away alone.
