Deep, deep down in the Pacific Ocean, in a spot called the Clarion-Clipperton Zone, scientists recently found 24 new kinds of tiny shrimp-like critters living in total darkness, including a whole new group of animals never seen before.

Where did scientists find these 24 brand-new deep-sea creatures?

These little creatures are called amphipods, and they live thousands of meters down where sunlight never reaches. Scientists were amazed to find one group so different from anything known that it needed a whole new scientific category, showing how much of the deep ocean is still a mystery.

In a deep, dark part of the Pacific Ocean floor is correct — scientists found these 24 new tiny, shrimp-like creatures, called amphipods, living in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone, thousands of meters below the surface.

They weren't found in a shallow tide pool or floating near the sunny surface — both are much brighter, warmer places very different from the cold, pitch-black deep seafloor where these creatures live.

One new creature was so different from anything known before that scientists made a whole new scientific group just to classify it, showing how much of the deep ocean remains a mystery.
