In 2025 and 2026, ocean scientists finished a giant project checking every corner of the sea and announced they had found over 1,100 kinds of sea creatures nobody had ever named before.
The Ocean Census project announced discovering over 1,100 brand-new marine species that scientists had never named before. Teams of researchers explored waters all over the world, from shallow coral reefs down to the deepest, darkest ocean trenches, cataloguing strange creatures that had gone completely unrecorded, a jump of 54 percent over the number found the previous year.
The project did not claim the ocean has no new animals left to find, in fact the opposite is true, these results show just how much marine life remains undiscovered. And scientists did not announce any brand-new sixth ocean, Earth's oceans remain organized the same way they always have.
Finding well over a thousand new species in just one year shows how vast and mysterious the ocean still is, even after centuries of exploration, with entirely unnamed creatures still turning up in places scientists have barely been able to reach.
