Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, the first true antibiotic, when he noticed that mold had contaminated one of his bacterial culture dishes in his London lab in 1928 and was killing the surrounding bacteria. He identified the mold as a Penicillium species, and further research turned this chance observation into penicillin, a medicine that could kill many types of disease-causing bacteria inside the human body without harming the patient.
He did not discover the polio vaccine, that came decades later through a completely separate line of research aimed at a viral disease rather than bacterial infections, and X-ray imaging had already been discovered years earlier by a different scientist entirely, unrelated to mold or bacteria.
Penicillin's discovery transformed medicine by making previously fatal bacterial infections treatable, and it was mass-produced in time to treat wounded soldiers during World War II, saving enormous numbers of lives that would previously have been lost to infected wounds.
