Water goes up into the sky as invisible mist, turns into clouds, then falls back down again and again.
The water cycle is the name for this endless up-and-down journey of water. Water evaporates from oceans, lakes, and rivers into invisible water vapor, rises into the sky, cools and gathers into clouds, and eventually falls back down as rain or snow, only to evaporate again and repeat the whole process over and over.
The rock cycle describes how rocks slowly change form over long stretches of time through heat and pressure, and the wind cycle isn't a real scientific term describing this kind of repeating natural process, so neither fits water's constant looping journey.
This cycle has been running continuously for billions of years, meaning some of the water falling as rain today may have once been part of an ancient ocean, evaporated and rained down countless times throughout Earth's history.
