In 2025, UNESCO formally expanded a Vietnamese national park, cementing the title of one gigantic cavern that had already stunned explorers with its own jungle, river, and weather system.

Which cave holds the record as the world's largest natural cave?

Son Doong Cave in Vietnam
Son Doong, part of Vietnam's Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, has a volume of roughly 38.5 million cubic meters, large enough to fit a 40-story skyscraper inside one chamber. In 2025 UNESCO expanded the park's World Heritage status, reaffirming the cave's global significance.

Son Doong Cave in Vietnam is correct — part of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, it holds the record as the world's largest natural cave, with a volume of roughly 38.5 million cubic meters, large enough that one of its chambers could fit a 40-story skyscraper.

Mammoth Cave in the United States is actually the longest cave system known, with the most total mapped passages, and Carlsbad Caverns is a spectacular and famous cave system too, but neither matches Son Doong's sheer chamber volume, which is what earns it the 'largest' title.

Son Doong is so enormous that parts of it have their own weather system, complete with clouds, and sections contain fully developed jungle growing inside the cave where sunlight reaches through collapsed sections of ceiling.
