Water plunges nearly a kilometer off a remote Venezuelan tabletop mountain before it even reaches mist, let alone a riverbed.

Which waterfall is the tallest in the world?

Angel Falls
Angel Falls in Venezuela drops about 979 meters (3,212 feet) from the Auyán-tepui plateau, making it easily the world's tallest waterfall. Much of the water actually evaporates into mist before reaching the ground below.

Angel Falls drops about 979 meters from the edge of the Auyán-tepui, a flat-topped mountain called a tepui in Venezuela's remote Canaima region. The fall is so tall and the water volume comparatively so modest that much of the water actually turns to fine mist and blows away in the wind before it ever reaches the base, making it visually unlike any other major waterfall.

Niagara Falls and Victoria Falls are both far more famous and carry vastly more water, but neither comes close in sheer height — Niagara drops only about 50 meters and Victoria Falls about 108 meters, both dwarfed by Angel Falls' near-kilometer plunge.

The falls are named after Jimmie Angel, an American aviator who spotted them while flying over the jungle in 1933 and later crash-landed his plane on top of the very plateau the water falls from.
