Most people picture endless sand when they hear the word "desert," but the technical definition is simply a place that receives very little precipitation.
A desert is technically defined as a region receiving very little precipitation, regardless of temperature, and by that definition Antarctica qualifies as the largest, since its interior gets extremely little snowfall despite its thick ice, covering roughly 5.5 million square miles.
The Sahara is the largest hot, sandy desert, matching most people's mental picture, but at about 3.6 million square miles is considerably smaller than Antarctica. The Arabian Desert is smaller still.
The Arctic is technically a desert too due to low precipitation, meaning Earth's two coldest regions are also its two largest deserts, often surprising people.
