world
We tend to picture even a dwarf planet as unimaginably vast, yet some worlds are smaller in surface area than a single country on Earth.
Russia's land area, at roughly 17.1 million square kilometers, is slightly larger than the entire surface area of the dwarf planet Pluto, which measures about 16.6 million square kilometers. This comparison works because Pluto is so small, with a diameter of only about 2,377 kilometers, that its total surface, wrapped around a tiny sphere, ends up smaller than the largest country on Earth.
It is not simply a tie, the numbers are close but Russia edges out Pluto by a real margin, so calling them equal understates just how compact a dwarf planet actually is compared to a sprawling nation.
Pluto's small size was a major reason it was reclassified from a full planet to a dwarf planet in 2006, since it does not dominate its orbital neighborhood the way the eight recognized planets do, despite still having enough gravity to pull itself into a round shape.
