Artemis is NASA's program to return astronauts to the Moon, named for the Greek goddess of the Moon and twin sister of Apollo, a deliberate nod to the original Moon-landing program it follows. Its first flight, Artemis I, sent an uncrewed Orion capsule looping around the Moon in late 2022 to test the hardware before astronauts climb aboard.
Apollo was NASA's original 1960s and '70s Moon program that put the first humans on the lunar surface, the predecessor Artemis is named after, not the current program itself. Constellation was an earlier 2000s-era Moon effort ultimately canceled before it flew astronauts.
