body

Your body is full of bones that help you stand, run, and jump!

Which bone protects your brain?

The skull
Your brain is soft and squishy, so the skull surrounds it like a built-in helmet to protect it from bumps.

The skull is a hard, curved case of bone that wraps completely around your brain, shielding it from bumps, falls, and other everyday knocks the way a helmet protects a bike rider's head. Your brain controls everything you think, feel, and do, so keeping it safe is one of the skeleton's most important jobs.

Ribs curve around your chest to protect softer organs like your heart and lungs, not your brain, while the spine is a long column of small bones that lets your back bend and protects the nerves running down it — both important, but neither one guards your head.

A baby's skull is actually made of several separate bony plates with soft gaps between them, called fontanelles, which slowly fuse together as the baby grows, letting the skull flex a little during birth.
