Instead of sending every piece of data to a distant central data center, many systems now process information right where it is created, like on a factory floor or inside a car.
Edge computing places processing power physically close to where data is generated, inside a car or on a factory sensor, instead of sending everything to a distant data center. For tasks like a self-driving car reacting to a pedestrian, the round trip to a distant cloud server is too slow, and the raw sensor data volume would overwhelm network bandwidth if it all had to travel that far.
Deep computing is not a standard term for this idea. Idle computing is nearly the opposite, implying unused machines rather than active local processing, so neither matches the real technique.
Edge and cloud computing are usually partners: edge devices handle split-second decisions locally while still sending summarized data to the cloud for long-term analysis and better models.
