In 2023 a new wireless standard, IEEE 802.11bb, was finalized for transmitting data not with radio waves but with the rapidly flickering light of ordinary LED lamps.
Li-Fi works by rapidly switching an LED on and off, or varying its brightness, far faster than the eye can detect, encoding data the way an old modem encoded data in phone-line tones. A photodetector on the receiving device picks up the flicker and decodes it back into digital information. Visible light offers far more unused spectrum than crowded radio bands, so Li-Fi can move data quickly in a confined space.
Sci-Fi is just short for science fiction and Hi-Fi refers to high-fidelity audio gear, neither a wireless standard. Unlike Wi-Fi, light cannot pass through walls, so Li-Fi is naturally confined to a room, a security plus but a coverage limit.
Because Li-Fi needs line of sight, some proposals have ordinary room lighting double as a data link, so the bulb lighting an office quietly beams internet to laptops beneath it.
