Network slicing works because 5G's core network is largely software-defined. Operators carve one physical set of towers, fiber, and servers into multiple logical networks, each with its own guaranteed bandwidth, latency, and reliability rules. A hospital's remote-surgery link can get an ultra-low-latency slice while a stadium gets a high-bandwidth video slice, all on the same underlying equipment at once.
Network flooding is an unwanted phenomenon where a router blasts data out every path, more associated with attacks than organizing traffic. Network mirroring just copies traffic for monitoring or backup; it creates no independent virtual networks with tailored performance.
Slicing is one reason carriers describe 5G as enabling new business models: a factory could lease a dedicated, guaranteed-performance slice like a private line, without laying a single new cable.
