Today you usually prove who you are online by logging in through big platforms like Google or Facebook, which then learn which sites you visit.
Decentralized identity aims to let people hold and share their own verified credentials directly, rather than proving who they are by logging in through a big platform that then tracks which other sites they visit. Using standards like verifiable credentials, a person can keep proofs, such as a diploma or an age verification, in their own digital wallet and reveal only the specific piece of information a website actually needs.
Giving every website a person's home address is the opposite of the privacy-preserving goal decentralized identity pursues, and stopping anyone from ever proving their age misreads the concept entirely, since the technology is meant to make selective, minimal proof of such facts easier, not to prevent it.
A key feature of well-designed decentralized identity systems is selective disclosure, meaning a person could prove they are over a certain age without revealing their exact birthdate.
