Many newer electric cars have quietly upgraded their internal wiring from a 400-volt system to an 800-volt one.

What is the main benefit of an 800-volt architecture?

Much faster charging, often 10-80% in about 18 minutes
Higher voltage lets more power flow without overheating the cables, so compatible cars can add hundreds of kilometers of range in well under half an hour. Porsche, Hyundai, and Kia were early adopters.

The main benefit of an 800-volt architecture is much faster charging, often taking a car from 10 to 80 percent charge in roughly 18 minutes, because higher voltage allows more electrical power to flow through the charging cables without them overheating. This lets compatible vehicles add hundreds of kilometers of range in well under half an hour, closing much of the gap between refueling a gasoline car and recharging an electric one.

A car driving without any battery at all is not possible for an electric vehicle, since the battery is what stores and supplies the energy the motor needs. Electricity becoming free at public chargers is unrelated to voltage architecture, which affects charging speed, not pricing.

Porsche, Hyundai, and Kia were early adopters of 800-volt systems, and their early success helped push other automakers to follow suit as fast charging became an increasingly important selling point for EV buyers.
