Instead of waiting to recharge, drivers of one Chinese EV brand can pull into a special station and let robots work on the car.

What happens at a NIO 'battery swap' station in just a few minutes?

A drained battery is swapped for a fully charged one
At a swap station, automated machinery removes the depleted pack and slots in a charged one, often faster than fast-charging. NIO has built thousands of these stations, mainly across China.

At a NIO battery swap station, a drained battery is swapped for a fully charged one, with automated machinery removing the depleted pack from underneath the car and installing a freshly charged pack in its place within just a few minutes. This process can often be faster than even the quickest fast-charging technology, since it avoids the physical limits of how quickly a battery can safely absorb electricity.

Repainting the whole car body is a cosmetic bodywork service entirely unrelated to battery technology. Replacing the electric motor would be a major mechanical repair, not a routine, quick service performed at a swap station.

NIO has built thousands of these stations, mainly across China, essentially betting that a network of swap infrastructure can solve the range anxiety and charging wait times that discourage some drivers from choosing electric vehicles.
