Norway, already a leader in electric cars and ferries, launched an unusual cargo vessel named the Yara Birkeland.
The Yara Birkeland is notable for being a zero-emission, battery-electric container ship, one of the world's first fully electric and autonomous vessels of its kind. It was designed to replace thousands of yearly diesel-truck trips that would otherwise be needed to move the same cargo by road, and batteries work well for this particular ship because its short coastal route allows frequent returns to port for recharging.
