Heavy long-haul trucks are hard to run on batteries alone, because the huge packs needed are heavy and slow to charge.
Hydrogen fuel-cell trucks claim the advantage of refueling in minutes and carrying less battery weight for long-haul work, since they generate electricity onboard from hydrogen rather than storing all their energy in an enormous, heavy battery pack. This matters because heavy battery packs large enough for long-distance trucking would be extremely heavy and slow to recharge, cutting into the cargo capacity and schedule reliability that trucking companies depend on.
Running forever without any fuel at all is not accurate, since fuel-cell trucks still consume hydrogen that must be produced and refilled regularly, just more quickly than charging a huge battery. Never requiring any servicing or parts is also false, as these trucks still need regular maintenance like any complex vehicle.
The bigger challenge for fuel-cell trucks isn't the technology itself but the surrounding infrastructure, since clean hydrogen production and refueling stations remain scarce and expensive compared to the widespread diesel and electric charging networks already in place.
