On some modern sites, bulldozers and excavators grade the land by themselves, shaping it to the exact design with almost no one touching the controls.
Satellite, or GPS, machine control is the technology that lets these bulldozers and excavators place their blades so precisely, combining satellite positioning signals with onboard sensors to continuously track the machine's exact location and orientation relative to a digital design plan, automatically guiding the blade to the correct grade with minimal need for a human operator to manually steer.
Sonar echo ranging uses reflected sound waves to measure distance, a technique mainly used underwater or in specialized detection systems, not for guiding earthmoving equipment on land. Radio signal jamming deliberately disrupts communication signals and would actually interfere with, rather than enable, this kind of precise automated machine guidance.
This machine control technology not only boosts grading accuracy on construction sites but also allows some equipment to operate with little or no direct human steering, a step toward increasingly autonomous construction machinery.
