For years, Tesla's electric cars in North America used a charging plug that was incompatible with every other brand.
Rivals like Ford, GM, and Rivian agreed to adopt Tesla's plug as the shared NACS standard, meaning they would build future vehicles compatible with Tesla's charging connector instead of continuing to use their own incompatible designs. This mattered because it gave their customers access to Tesla's extensive Supercharger network, which was already the largest and most reliable fast-charging system across North America, easing a major pain point for EV owners.
Banning Tesla owners from public chargers would move in the opposite direction, restricting access rather than expanding shared compatibility. Switching every car to wireless charging only describes an entirely different, still largely experimental charging technology unrelated to this connector agreement.
This standardization effectively ended years of a confusing patchwork of incompatible plugs across different car brands, something that had long frustrated EV drivers trying to find a charger that actually fit their vehicle.
